Aromatherapy – Is It Right For Your Child?
Aromatherapy is a new approach to emotional well being and a path to healing through the use of essential oils. Oils in aromatherapy have soothing effect on the body, mind and soul.
A gentle hug, smile or a kiss are forms of connection, bonding between the parent and the child. It is therapeutic for a parent, usually the mother, when she would show her love to her child by the simple gesture of human touch – it can often be a massage on the child’s legs, abdomen, back, arms, hands or feet. Once a baby reaches the age of six weeks, he or she becomes cognizant to the smell of his/her mother, which imbues them with a heightened sense of smell, as they are now able to ascertain whether a smell is fragrant or not. Fragrant essential oils used during the upbringing of your child supports your little one’s health, happiness and well being.
Essential oils have distinct composition determining the fragrance, color, and effect on our body. What you would want to do first before unleashing the wide variety of fragrant aromas on your child would be to visit an aroma therapist or general practitioner for advise. If possible, carry out detailed research your self on the oil you plan to use on your infant or child.

Lavender oil is excellent home remedy for headaches, earaches and even insect bites. Geranium and rose oil – used as a skin softener, astringent and skin toner, even on younger people. Chamomile and peppermint oil work in preventing premature hair loss. For those with dandruff problems, use either lavender, lemon or curry leaf essential oils. For any bruises and burns, use tea tree and lavender oils. Constipation can be cured in most cases with black pepper oil. Cedar wood, eucalyptus and tea tree oil – to cure most types of cough. Use ginger, lavender and/or thyme oil if your child has a sore throat. Lavender and roman chamomile oil blend allows for restful sleep at night. Lemon and grapefruit oil – mix in warm water and bathe your little ones afterwards for a refreshing effect.
A word of caution for any parents planning on using aromatherapy oils on their children. Observe caution and discretion when using essential oils. It is recommended you only use mild variants in modest amounts. Use water or carrier oils to dilute essential oils, which are substances with a very high concentration. If not diluted or diluted incorrectly, these oils can cause your little tots’ skin to get irritated. Do not put your children in a situation where they can easily access essential oils.
