Don’t Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets ” Update Them

Take a longer look around your kitchen and you’ll find that the cabinets are probably the most distinctive feature of your kitchen. They’re a very important accessory. Unfortunately, their style and paint or stain don’t last forever. So what can you do when your kitchen is in need of an update, but you don’t have the money lying around to buy new cabinets? There are a few ways you can update your cabinets without having to spend a ton of money.

One of the easiest ways to update your cabinets is to just switch out your current door handles or knobs, which tend to quickly make cabinets look outdated or old. So you can replace them once in a while for just a few dollars, and they’ll definitely help you update your kitchen. And whats not to love about new hardware on your cabinet doors? Just make sure you replace your old knobs with new knobs, instead of trying to replace them with handles; or vice-versa.

As you’re in the process of replacing the handles or knobs on your cabinet doors, be sure and stop by the local flea markets and bargain stores before you head down to the big retailers. If you buy someone else’s old handles, you’ll easily save a few bucks, and then you can just clean them up to look as good as new. There’s probably nothing wrong with them; the owner probably just no longer liked them. But that doesn’t mean they wont look great in your kitchen!

Another excellent way to update the look of your kitchen doors is by re-staining or re-painting them. Be sure and sand off the old stain or paint, and then apply a new coat. And be sure and redo the front frames of the cabinets themselves too. Re-staining or re-painting might take a bit more work than other options, but you’ll find afterward that it was well worth it ” it will look like you have brand new cabinets, and you’ll have more money in your pocket.

If you don’t want to put in the time or effort to re-paint or re-stain, you might think about just replacing the doors of the cabinets. Look for doors that match the style and paint/stain of your current cabinets, but with a newer, updated look. When it comes down to it, the look of your cabinets is almost totally based on the doors themselves, not the entire cabinet; replacing just the doors is an excellent way to clean up your kitchen without spending the cash to do the entire cabinets.

If you haven’t already, you’ll soon find out that updating your kitchen can get pretty expensive. That’s why you shouldn’t waste the extra cash by buying brand new cabinets when you can simply update them with very little money and work. Another option might even be to hire a contractor to build just new cabinet doors for about half the price it would cost for all new cabinets. Why just the doors? Because most likely there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the cabinets themselves. Don’t replace what isn’t broken! Use a little imagination and create a whole new look for your kitchen for less cash than the cost of new cabinets.
