How Poker Became Popular – A Look At The History of Poker
Poker was started in some form about ten centuries ago. The various features of such games like domino combinations and bluffing were developed at that time.
The game seems to have originated in China. A game similar to poker was played by the Chinese royals in 969 AD. It is the simplest form of poker discovered yet. So it has its roots dating back to more than a thousand years ago.
A game similar to poker was also played by the Egyptians in the 12th centuries. It was known as Ganjifa. This game consisted of 96 cards made of thin slices of wood. The Persians are also said to have played a similar game consisting of 25 cards.
Another game was played by the Spanish which they called Primero where the number of cards passed was 3. Primero was later adapted by the French and the Germans. All of these games had an element of bluffing in them.
The French took the game to Canada in the 18th century. The game spread to whole of Canada. Jonathan Green has talked about poker in his book on gambling. In the book, we find information about how the game was played at that time. The Europeans spread the game to various countries where they traveled.
The popularity of Poker spread like wildfire in the United States. In the nineteenth century, poker tables were available in nearly every town in the country. It got even more popularity during the civil war. The introduction of the joker card took place in 1875.
There has a huge increase in popularity of poker in the last few decades. Many different versions of the game have been developed. Not only is this played in casinos but it is also played online by hundreds of thousands of people every month.
