Transform Your Mind And Think Strategically

by Lynn Lopez

Strategic thinking is both an approach and a frame of mind. It is an approach that allows you to see situations and conditions as systems. You see the big picture. You look at the elements in that big picture. You become aware of the interdependent nature of each element that makes up the whole picture. You observe the dynamism involved in the relationships. Once you have looked at the big picture, then you shift your focus on the specifics of the elements. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each element? You figure out ways to enhance the strengths and improve the weaknesses. At the same time, you make contingency plans to address any unexpected conditions that might arise.

Strategic thinking has room for questions and questioning. It is a way of thinking that acknowledges the differences within the system. It understands that there are various ways of dealing with situations. Strategic thinking is viewing things from different perspectives, preferably from the perspectives of the different elements that comprise the whole.

When employing strategic thinking, it is necessary to be open-minded, flexible and responsive to new ideas and opportunities. Visualize. Where do you want to be? What are your goals? Determine what needs to be done, what must be done, who will get it done, and what resources are required to get things done. Focus and concentrate on achieving your goals.

You can approach issues from diverse points of view. This means that it is necessary for you to change your long-held beliefs and perspectives that there is only one right way of doing things. Sometimes strategic thinking can be viewed as “thinking outside the box” – turning a matter or issue inside and out, upside down. Keep in mind that strategic thinking applies to long-term planning.

How can you develop strategic thinking? You might consider playing strategy games, whether board, computer or video games. These games will teach you how to come up with winning strategies that you can very well apply in your real life. Some of the games that you should try are chess, checkers, Chinese checkers, Stratego, among others. There are online strategy games that allow its players to play in turns or in real time. These games are useful in teaching you how to set your goals, manage your resources, determine and analyze your strengths and weaknesses, make decisions, and plan your strategies to increase the chances for success. These strategy games will help improve your decision-making skills because the games’ outcomes depend on such skills, which is strategic thinking in action.
